I’ve visited Killarney more times than I can count, and location is one of the first things I’d consider before booking.
Staying close to town makes it much easier to walk to pubs, restaurants and traditional music in the evening, while properties further out often come with easier parking and quicker access to Killarney National Park.

This is somewhere I'd look at for a romantic trip or a special occasion, particularly if you'd rather wake up beside the lakes and National Park than have pubs and restaurants right outside the door.

For most first time visitors, I’d recommend staying in Killarney Town Centre or towards the town end of Muckross Road. Both give you easy access to pubs and restaurants, while Muckross Road is also well positioned for exploring Killarney National Park.
Is it better to stay in Killarney Town Centre or outside town?
It depends on how you plan to spend your trip. Stay in the town centre if you want to walk to pubs, restaurants and shops, particularly if you don’t have a car.
Staying further out can be better if you have a car and prefer easier parking, a quieter setting or closer access to Killarney National Park.
Can you stay in Killarney without a car?
Yes. Killarney is one of the easier places in Ireland to visit without a car, particularly if you stay in the town centre. The train and bus stations are centrally located, and many of the town’s pubs, restaurants and attractions are within walking distance.
You can also join organised tours to explore places like the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula.
How many nights should you stay in Killarney?
I’d recommend at least three nights in Killarney. This gives you time to explore Killarney National Park and spend a day driving the Ring of Kerry without feeling too rushed.
If you also want to take a day trip to the Dingle Peninsula or explore more of County Kerry, I’d stay for four or five nights.
Is Killarney a good base for the Ring of Kerry?
Yes. Killarney is one of the most popular places to base yourself for the Ring of Kerry and is a convenient starting point for the route.
It also has a much wider choice of hotels, restaurants and pubs than many of the smaller towns along the way, making it a good option if you prefer to stay in one place for a few nights.
Should I stay in Killarney or Kenmare?
Choose Killarney if you want more choice when it comes to hotels, pubs, restaurants and things to do. It’s also particularly convenient for Killarney National Park and has better public transport connections.
Kenmare is smaller and has a more relaxed feel, so I’d choose it if you prefer somewhere quieter. Both are excellent bases for exploring the Ring of Kerry, but they offer quite different experiences.
Is it worth staying inside or near Killarney National Park?
Yes, if scenery and access to nature are a priority. Staying close to the National Park can put you nearer attractions such as Muckross House, Muckross Abbey and Torc Waterfall.
The trade off is that you may be further from Killarney Town Centre, so I’d consider whether you’re happy to drive or take a taxi when heading out for dinner or drinks.
